Proof Coil Chains, Binder Chains and Towing Chains

As we know that in the transportation business , the industry standard truck chains basically refer to G7 chains and snow chains, and chains as products have much more than just those binder chains , as we can see that there are sash chains, hot dip galvanized grade 30 chains and more, and for towing and recovery needs, tow chains are there to stay, simply put, these chains are mostly made from steel .

Truck tie down chains usually mean grade 70 transport chains, some people call them binder chains, it’s well known that we have 2 different standard organizations for steel chains, ASTM and National Association of Chain Manufacturers. ASTM standard indicates the chains are short link ones, while NACM are regular link chains. The short link chains are more flexible than regular link chains, when you’re deploying chains under certain conditions, say wrap around tight corner, most likely you will need short links, regular links are not for these apps. We can see that most tie down chains are being deployed on the trailers, for the purpose of cargo securement, but you will see some other uses of these transportation chains.

The tire chains mostly used when it’s snow covered, thus the name “snow chains” is also a popular one, then we know that snow chains are tire chains, but tire chains are not equal to snow chains, for instance, you probably will put tire chains on when the road is icy. Most of the time the tire chains are in pairs on the shelf, since you will always need to chain up tires in pairs. Due to the use condition, all tire chains are made from steel. People will match tire chains to their vehicle tire size, if you have a passenger car you will be looking for car tire chain, if you have a truck you are going to use truck tire chains.

And the hardware chains are a big category, you’re going to see all kinds of chains in this family of product. Let’s see some examples, machine chains, with twisted link and straight link, and coil chains, twisted or straight links, sash chain , electro-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized grade 30 chains , and all those decoration steel chains, this is a big family. Steel Hardware chains are popular due it’s variety and applications, the general purpose proof coil grade chains are the most popular one, for the record, the grade 30 chains can even be used for the decoration purpose.

Last but not least, let’s check out towing chain , there is only 5/16” tow chains with towing rig available, it has the WLL of 4700LBS, because most of vehicles being towed will be put on flat bed, the WLL is good for at least 9400LBS load, due to standardization of tow trucks, only a few varieties of tow chains are needed, for instance we only need 6′ and 10′ long tow chains, as for hooks we only see T & J hooks and long shank J hooks, since tow trucks all have same design and set up, only a few varieties of the tow chains are required, both towing businesses and chain manufacturers can benefit from this standardization.
